Boulders, Rocks, and Sand

The 2020 Annual Meeting will feature a presentation by Jenny Puckett titled “Boulders, Rocks, and Sand: the marvelously bumpy road of Wake Forest history.” Puckett will share her experience authoring Thine Ancient Days: A WFU HISTORY, 1818-1956, the first coffee table book of the University’s history. The book was originally inspired by the curiosity of Wake Forest students who wished to know how the University got started and what it must have looked like in the past. The text is arranged in story form, accompanied by beautiful historic images and artifacts, many from the Wake Forest Historical Museum collections.

Jenny Robinson Puckett graduated from Wake Forest University in 1971. After completing the Master of Arts degree at Middlebury College, she taught Spanish for many years at the high school and college levels. She was a lecturer in Spanish at Wake Forest from 1995–2013, during which time she developed a passionate interest in the history of her alma mater. From 2005-2013, she worked with the student-led Traditions Council, which undertakes projects to educate the student body on Wake Forest lore, history, and traditions. In 2016, Jenny received Wake Forest University’s highest honor, the Medallion of Merit, for service to the University.

About the WFC Birthplace Society

The Wake Forest College Birthplace Society has spent more than half a century working to keep the story of Wake Forest alive, and what began as a small group of activists in 1956 has grown into a substantial and significant nonprofit organization.

Today the Birthplace Society and Wake Forest Historical Museum care for over 15,000 pages of documents ranging from the lecture notes of Dr. Willis R. Cullom to the football plays of Coach Douglas “Peahead” Walker. Over 1,000 college publications are part of the collection. One outstanding example is a college catalog that was printed and distributed shortly after the school was founded. The collections also include thousands of photographs and glass negatives that show the earliest known views of the original campus.
